As an Intermediate Student at Codrington Public School, students are involved in the Red Maple Forest of Reading Program. There are ten fiction novels and ten non-fiction books that are available to read that appeal to a broad range of student audiences. If students read a minimum of five in each category, they are eligible to participate in the nation-wide vote for our favourite Canadian author. This is an opportunity to be exposed to a wide range of subjects and genres; some students already enjoy, and a few that they would not ordinarily choose for themselves, in hopes of expanding their range of interests.

Students will have responsibilities throughout the Red Maple Forest of Reading Program to complete, Think Tac Toe as well as two mandatory assignments. A Letter to the Author and a Summary of one of the novels. Students will be identifying their reading goals with me upon beginning the program. Newsletters and updates will be sent home every two-three weeks to ensure that you as a parent can support your student in their reading quest. Think Tac Toe is an assignment that uses the multiple intelligences as well as Bloom’s Taxonomy to deepen student reading. Please see the attached document for the assignments.

Classroom News

Things you might need for the 2014/2015 school year:

Here's a quick list of some things you will find very useful this year:

  • a calculator (it does not have to be a fancy, expensive one)

  • a memory stick - invaluable for transporting information, pictures, music, etc. from one computer to another.  This is of course optional, but a really useful tool to have.

  • all the normal things like pens, pencils, coloured pencils, markers - I will be giving out some pencils, an eraser, a ruler, and we do have some supplies like glue, paper, protractors, and scissors to share.

  • you likely do not need binders.  You will be given duotangs and folders for notes so you can hand them in individually.

  • a water bottle for phys ed is a handy thing to have.  You can also have this at your desk during the day if you are careful.

  • a good pair of running shoes for phys ed is essential.

  • all students need clothes to change into for phys ed, for reasons of safety, comfort, and hygiene.

Bullying Thoughts and Discussions

We can all make a difference in the lives of young people everywhere when we take action.  We can all make a commitment to learn more about bullying, raise awareness about supports that are available to young people, and unite to take a stand against bullying.

Here are some worthwhile anti-bullying sites:

Time Management and Organizational Skills

Time management and organizational skills are essential for success during a student's high school years.  We will continue to focus on this in grade 8 - it is a difficult skill for students to develop, but it can be done!  The use of the agenda, and the use of this web site should really help.
